She did not just sing the blues... she lived the blues. Back in the day, black entertainers still had to go round back to the servants, employees entrance-- they would allow black people to entertain on stage, but not walk in the front door.
The tours these musicians and singers took were on long hot dusty bus trips, on shoestring budgets. Many greats turned to drugs & alcohol to cope with the harsh lifestyle one had to live to be a performer back in the day.
She sure did sing that song with passion & it did take guts to sign it in the era where hangings still took place.
