Day 2 at the Enigma Cafe.....Thursday 10.25.07

I love this picture. Last summer when I was fixing up my kitchen I went to a Sale at Walmart. This Picture framed and lovely was in the trash at Customer Service, I saw it and rescued it. So.....it now hangs in the Enigma Cafe Kitchen. All it needed was some glue and paint to fix the frame, and to hang above my spice shelve behind the Stove. It reminds when I lived and worked in New England. It reminds me of Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches..you know the kind of soup I mean, thick buttery soup with dill sprinkled on top, and Grilled Cheese made on rye bread with Smokey Goulda and Havarti, and served with honey mustard and sweet baby dill pickles....sigh...

so I have wiped down the counters...and put on some fresh coffee...Fair trade, and I even sprinkled some cinnamon....so it smells so lovely in here...sigh...
and yet it has been a lonely quiet eve here....so I will curl up with my New Molly Ivens and NEW Valerie Plame book.....

Tomato soup and grilled cheese has been one of my favorites ever since I can remember.
I'm a Philistine though - head straight for Campbells tomato. It takes me right back to childhood. Always add butter though and sometimes a dash of Tabasco.
And spinkled with Parmesan.
I like rye best too but prices have gone through the roof here. Maybe I'll splurge on a loaf anyway.
ahhhhh tomato soup....rye is always on the day old sale shelf at the store nearest me- they have a great bakery- that I can't afford....but the day old's that is in my price range...
tobasco- now that Is something I have not thought to add...yyummmmy...
The Book is who let the Dogs Out- it is all about this current later part of the Bush years...but I am reading Valerie' Plame's book first...
Food is so steep here too...I have been living on soup and salad...( lettece) and trying to keep costs down- but Everything is steep- even the Amish produce...and I have not bought any meats in a long time...can't....I am suprised people are not talking about it.....
But I have a theory that if you know how to cook- you can get through anything...and it just means being creative...
Food prices are over the top. And you are right, we don't mention it.
I will, right here, right now.
I buy only a small amount of the special things. I just eat less of it and not as often. too much meat is not good for a person. What is too much is up to each individual, but farmers market produce is cheaper and we have had many meals lately with 2-3 or even 4 items from the market, no packaging, no meat, no waste and generated trash, composting the trimmed ends.
I make my own granola. I make it with less honey or maple syrup than the store bought brands. It is better for you, lower in calories and no preservatives.
I eat one whole cucumber everyday. just peel and eat. cool crisp and refreshing.
The costs are ridiculous. No wonder there is a weight problem and so much diabetes and heart disease.poor people can only afford cheap loaves of white bread and bologna made from floor scrapings of the slaughterhouse. Maybe some peanut butter when it's on sale.
I'm glad i can afford to come over to the Enigma cafe and have a bowlof that soup. By the way, I'll pay you for the bowl i had yesterday and todays bowl when i get my check on the first, I hope that's okay. Nice of you to feed us that are on a fixed income towards the end of the month when we are all short of funds.
Hey, that fireplace looks great! I like the stone work. Are those rocks quarried from the shore of the big lake? How nice. And the warmth it generates is mighty soothing.
Ahhhh, you did such a nice job on the fireplace ....it is lovely across from that big old comfy sofa....and I hope you saw that folks are bringing in their Leaf Photos to hang up and around- you can email me one off your laptop and I will hang it up...hmm, maybe right over the fireplace.....and you know that because of the fine job you did on the fireplace- soup is on the house friend...
Now about the vegi's, my son and I have gone European too, I walk every day to the store and pick up a little something for dinner, sometimes soup, or salad...I went through a tomato phase...and now it is English Cucumbers ( of all things).....they are super crunchy, and the best part- you don't have to peel them...and they are great with peas and swiss cheese in a salad...and also they even stay crunchy in soup...
That fireplace is so lovely and the lake rocks are perfect...and the mesquite should be delivered this week....that will smell nice...
Oh, and I think I found an old Fireplace Popcorn Popper....that will be fun won't it ?
wlep....have to go throw the Friday Night Music on for the Watergate folks...I will be back ;-)
This is wonderful! How did you get it up & running so quickly? Must be all that volunteer labor. The decor is so cozy, I already feel at home. But I'll spare you all & leave my shoes on.
I do canned Campbell's Tomato soup, too. Add 1/3 soup can milk, 1/3 water. If you add a whole can, it's not thick enough. While it's heating up, I sautee finely chopped green onions in a little butter until they are very brown & crisp to float on top of each bowl of steaming soup. I like it with sour dough bread, sliced & toasted in the toaster oven with a mere hint of butter & parmesan cheese & fresh finely chopped parsley (patted dry) on top. If you can find italian parsley, grab it. Many uses for that in almost any soup or salad or casserole, etc.
Husband prefers Tomato Bisque, so when I feel like pleasing him, I skip the water (use 1/2 soup can of milk only, cream would be thicker, but calorific) & add finely chopped stewed italian style tomatoes (canned Del Monte or S&W are fine). First siphon off all the liquid in the can (save to use in any recipe that needs tomato sauce), then chop up the tomatoes. While that's heating, toast an extremely thin slice of sour dough bread with a slab of any white cheese on top (Hub likes swiss, I like part-skim mozarella), sprinkled with some garlic powder. Set one of these carefully on top of each steaming bowl of soup.
Pop Corn Popper for the F/P? Perfect!
